Flemish Masterpieces

The Flemish Masterpieces Decree protects rare and indispensable masterpieces. The list includes two manuscripts from the Letterenhuis collection.

The list of Flemish masterpieces

The Masterpiece List is a list of individual art objects as well as a number of collections. Most of the works are publicly owned, but the list also includes a number of items that are privately held. The list of protected masterpieces (2005) includes paintings and drawings by such artists as Rubens, Jordaens and Van Dyck. Works by Gustave de Smet, James Ensor, Constant Permeke, Frits van den Berghe, Rik Wouters and many others can be found on the list of provisionally protected masterpieces (2006).

Manuscripts in the list of Flemish masterpieces

In October of 2007 two manuscripts of the Letterenhuis collection were included in the list of provisionally protected masterpieces: the volume De Feesten van Angst en Pijn by Paul van Ostaijen and the novel Kaas by Willem Elsschot.

Both manuscripts have now been digitalised. The original manuscripts are no longer available to visitors in the reading room, in order to duly protect them from damage as a result of manipulation. They are available digitally.
